Raspberry Ketone Supplementation

What is Raspberry Ketone?

Micaela Guevara

Raspberry Ketone is a supplement found in raspberries that is claimed to be potential for weight loss! It is proven to prevent weight gain and work throughout the body to reduce body weight from increasing since it affects the body's hormones. It was said in the article from NCBI that "many weight loss supplements include caffeine and capsaicin since they are known to increase energy expenditure by up to 13% and have been proposed to counteract the decrease in metabolic rate that often accompanies weight loss" (Lopez). This was a common fact that most people claimed would be a great weight loss affect but there was a study that used "Prograde Metabolism a multi-ingredient dietary supplement that contains primarily raspberry ketone, caffein, capsaicin, garlic, ginger and citrus uranium and is suggested to be used in combination with exercise and nutrition program." While most weight loss supplements include caffeine and capsaicin, it was scientifically proven to show that those with the supplement such as Prograde Metabolism (that contains supplements such as raspberry ketones) will help even more with weight loss (Lopez).

In this peer-reviewed article on "The Effects of Raspberry Ketone Supplementation on Body Composition" it also describes that "weight loss products claiming to increase fat oxidation through large doses of caffeine and other central nervous system activators". This was similar to the claim above where people rely on weight loss supplements with caffeine; however, it describes that "Raspberry ketones have been inked to anti-obese actions and weight loss in rodent models, even in the presence of a high fat diet." Studies have been investigated that raspberry ketones helped in an experiment with the fat metabolism of mice.

Raspberry Ketone supplements have grabbed consumer attention with the possibility that they might help burn fat and aid weight loss. Even though many have thought it was to help directly through the fruit, it actually is synthetically produced for use in commercial products as flavorings, fragrances, and finally dietary supplements (etd.ohiolink.edu). Therefore, it showed that it does not have a direct effect, it just comes from the fruit itself.

How can this help me?

Ketone supplements have been proven to:

  • prevention of weight gain during a high-fat diet
  • enhanced norepinephrine-lipolysis
  • increased adiponectin expression
  • translocation of hormone-sensitive lipase in adipocytes
Many can buy their raspberry ketones in the store as chews and it has even been used in the fragrance and food industry for their smell and flavor properties. It is used as a "regulator of fat metabolism and a cosmetic agent" according to the article "The Effects of Raspberry Ketone Supplementation on Body Composition" (etd.ohiolink.edu). In this article, it describes raspberry ketone as "a safe alternative to stimulant-based drugs and could have potential benefits in the treatment of obesity." This is in contrast to stimulants such as caffeine that can "increase heart rate, blood pressure, plasma levels of catecholamines, and inhibits digestion and other parasympathetic processes" (etd.ohiolink.edu).

In this article, raspberry ketone should be consumed with restraint because o the insufficient scientific evidence that raspberry ketone can aid the fight against human obesity (NFS Journal). Those dealing with obesity and being overweight are recommended for this particular supplement and that includes whatever age, gender, and weight. Like I mentioned before, it can be bought at the store as a gummy for nutrients so it would be okay for children to take it as well if they are a bit overweight. There was also mentioned to be a "significant difference in body fat percentage after completion of a large dose raspberry ketone supplementation regimen" (NFS Journal). This means that those who take it in the morning throughout a given week will have effects that could help their hunger and weightless throughout the day when taken in the morning.

In terms of side effects and cons, there would need to be more research and evidence on raspberry ketones for there are only a couple articles that provided only a small amount of insufficient scientific evidence. But other than that there was a positive showing of affects when experiments were taken.
